About Glasgow

Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland and the third largest in the UK with a population of over 1 million people, with the first settlement recorded in pre-historic times. In Gaelic, Glasgow translates as 'dear green place' – and this is certainly evident if one takes a stroll through many of the beautiful parks and gardens in the city and beyond. The Glasgow dialect (sometimes called the 'Glasgow patter') is unique to the city – for example, Scottish Ballet is known in the city simply as the 'Fancy Dancers'.

Glasgow has many amenities for a wide range of cultural activities, from curling to opera and ballet, and from football to art appreciation; it also has a large selection of museums that include those devoted to transport, religion and modern art. The city's principal library, the Mitchell Library, is the largest public reference library in Europe. Most of Scotland's national arts organisations are based in Glasgow, including Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet, The National Theatre of Scotland, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Scottish Youth Theatre.

The Genée International Ballet Competition logo for Glasgow 2013 (above), is inspired by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and the ‘Glasgow Rose’ motif.
