Commissioned Choreographers

One of the most exciting and unique elements of the Genée International Ballet Competition is the Commissioned Choreographer - each year the Artistic Director of the RAD commissions a choreographer with a strong link either to the RAD, the competition or the host country. The choreographer chooses two pieces of music and then he/she works with the candidates over the 10-day period creating two (one for males and one for females) new solos on them. These solos are premiered as part of the competition and are notated using Benesh Movement Notation to ensure that they are saved for both artistic and educational purposes.

The commissioned choreographer for the 2013 Genée in Glasgow is Robert Binet.

Robert was born in Toronto, Canada and trained at Canada’s National Ballet School. He has created works for the National Ballet of Canada, the Royal Ballet, Wayne McGregor | Random Dance, the German National Youth Ballet (second company of the Hamburg Ballet), New York City Ballet’s Choreographic Institute, Ballet Black and the Estonian National Ballet. In January 2012, Robert was appointed Royal Ballet Choreographic Apprentice. In this newly created position he is mentored by Wayne McGregor and has created work for the Royal Ballet and Wayne McGregor | Random Dance. In autumn 2013 Robert will create his first main stage work for the National Ballet of Canada.
