Student course guide

The Royal Academy of Dance offers a wide range of courses, classes and workshops for young people

How you can help us

The RAD is a charity registered in England and Wales No 312826 and our existence, as well as some activities in particular, very much depends upon the generosity bestowed upon us from individuals and organisations. Your contributions help us maintaining the dance industry healthy by sustaining high quality syllabi examinations and dance teacher training. We seek support through donations, sponsorship and legacies.

Who can benefit?

Dancers
The RAD holds a number of competitions that assist in the career development of the young student by providing not only a platform for the young student to perform, but also financial  assistance by way of a bursary or prize money. A couple of examples are the Phyllis Bedells Bursary (a bursary of £1,000) and the Genée International Ballet Competition (prize money totalling £20,000).
These competitions offer sponsorship opportunities to individuals and companies who wish to assist the Academy in fulfilling its mission.

Student teachers
Our Faculty of Education offers a range of academic programmes and professional qualifications. The programmes can be attended either at the Academy’s headquarters in London or whilst living at home, in English or in other languages, even full or part time, and can vary in length from three months to three years. Some of these programmes are funded by Hefce, whereas others are funded by the student themselves.

Regional opportunities
The Academy holds a series of summer schools throughout the United Kingdom at which a scholarship is given to the student who has made the best progress throughout the week. The scholarship consists in granting a place for the winner in order for him/her to return the following year.

You can support us in different ways:

Give as you earn
Registered with the 'Give As You Earn' scheme, a government initiative, the Royal Academy of Dance offers an individual a comprehensive and tax-free way of donating. You can give as much or as little as you like direct from your payroll. For more information, please contact finance@rad.org.uk

Sponsorship
We offer tailored sponsorship packages that provide the perfect platform to meet your business objectives. Your company is able to align itself with the prestigious and internationally renowned Academy whilst simultaneously engaging with other leading corporations and individuals who continue to share in the development of dance education.

Leaving a legacy
Leaving a legacy is a very personal act. You can choose to leave your gift for general use or instead direct it to a more specific need of the Academy. Some of the key areas of need include education programmes, performance and special needs.

The Royal Academy of Dance relies on the generosity of dance enthusiasts in order to support the many programmes and educational projects which we offer. We are internationally known and respected, and with your help we will continue to expand and reach even more dance teachers and students worldwide.

By leaving us a legacy you will:

  • - help the RAD to increase the profile and power of dance around the world and giving children, regardless of age, ability or socio-economic background the chance to learn to dance
  • - support the Academy in its endeavour to discover new talent and enable young students to fulfil their true potential
  • - ensure that the RAD continues to raise standards of dance training around the world, offering future generations of young children the benefit of teachers trained to the highest standards
  • - enable the Academy to continue to train teachers through further and higher education programmes and study

There are three ways in which you can leave a legacy or bequest to the Royal Academy of Dance (please read this information carefully before deciding which step to take. We would also advise that you consult your solicitor):

1- Pecuniary Legacy: this means that you will leave the RAD a specified sum in your will. Pecuniary legacies can be affected by inflation, so the amount you leave may not be worth as much in the future as when the will is written.

2- Residuary Legacy: this is where, after remembering relatives and friends with any specific gifts, you may want to leave some or the entire residue to a charity.

3- Specific Legacy: this refers to a specific item such as a piece of jewellery or property being left to the charity. If you have already made a will and would like to consider including the Royal Academy of Dance in it, all you need to do is fill in a Codicil Form.
We advise that you speak to a solicitor on how to obtain and complete this form, to avoid legal or technical mistakes.

The RAD administers all legacies and ensures that the true intention of your legacy is fulfilled. Please note that Legacy income is not used on administration costs.
