Introduction to the Music Department

The music department at the Royal Academy of Dance is involved in a variety of activities including performance, administration, recording & publishing, research and advice. All our activities are guided and informed by the Academy's music policy.

Performance

The Academy currently employs three full-time musicians who accompany classes, examinations, summer schools, workshops or perform at other events,

Administration

They also administer all music-related activities and responsibilities at Academy headquarters, including a database of freelance dance musicians. Recording and publishing

The Academy musicians contribute to the Music Development Working Group which develops new music products, initiatives and policies.

Recent new products include Studio Series:Intution (3 volumes), A Dance Class Anthology (sheet music for free classes, with a guide to playing for dance) and Sheet Music for the Fonteyn Nureyev Young Dancers Competition.

Research and advice

In addition to their work on internal projects, the Music Department can offer advice to members on matters such as finding pianists, copyright and licensing, and repertoire-related questions. Visit our music information page to find out more.
