World Leading Dance Education and Training Organisation enters China - The Royal Academy of Dance to accredit courses delivered by TongJi University


China, Shanghai – 27 May 2005. TongJi University, School of Film has entered into an agreement with the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) whereby the RAD, through its Faculty of Education, will accredit courses of study delivered by the Division of Dance Studies, a department of the School of Film of TongJi University. Students who have successfully completed RAD modules will be eligible for Registered Teacher Status of the RAD. The agreement signing ceremony took place at the Shanghai Concert Hall and signals the formal entry of the worlds largest and most influential dance education and training organisations into China. It was also announced that the RAD will be opening a representative office in Shanghai.

Founded in 1920, with over 15,000 members in 84 countries world-wide, the Royal Academy of Dance is one of the world’s most influential organisations in the field of dance education and offers a unique portfolio of internationally acclaimed dance and dance teaching qualifications. Luke Rittner, Chief Executive of the RAD states “Ballet is a very special art form, its training is unique in enhancing both physical and mental development of an individual, we therefore hope that with the introduction of our education and training system into China, Chinese students will have further opportunity to experience an internationally recognised educational and training method.”

TongJi University is one of the leading universities directly under the State Ministry of Education in China. It offers degree programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and currently has over 41,000 students studying at the University. Executive Director of the Shanghai Film Corporation, Head of Film, TongJi University, Dr Ren Zhong Ren stated that “We are extremely pleased to be able to collaborate with such a world leading dance organisation as the Royal Academy of

Dance, we believe that the combined forces of two established institutions such as TongJi and the Academy will propel our Dance Education and Training further into
the International Dance scene, we shall work closely with the Academy to nurture the (dance) talents of our country”.

The Royal Academy of Dance Syllabi (Chinese version) will be published and distributed by the Shanghai Arts Publishing House subsidiary Music Publishing House towards the end of 2005.

The ceremony marked the exciting collaboration between the Royal Academy of Dance and TongJi University. This collaboration will result in graduates who have successfully completed the RAD focussed modules within their programme being eligible for Registered Teacher Status of the Royal Academy of Dance. The RAD’s role as an examining body, together with their increased commitment to dance education in China through the collaboration with TongJi University and the Shanghai Arts Publishing House will result in the RAD opening a representative office in Shanghai.
